Iowa DOT rejects federal recommendation to stop using humor and pop culture references in signs

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – The Iowa DOT is rejecting a recommendation from the Federal Highway Administration (FHA) asking them not to use certain messages on highway signs. In the recently released 11th edition of the FHA’s Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, the FHA recommends departments avoid messages that feature “popular culture references, unconventional sign legend syntax, or that are intended to be humorous.”
