In a recent hunting incident in Baca County, Colorado, a 70-year-old man from Iowa was accidentally shot by his hunting partner. The group of three hunters from Iowa was pursuing coyotes when the incident occurred. According to the investigation by Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW), one hunter, Matthew Mullenix, 48, also from Iowa, spotted a coyote and fired his shotgun but missed. He then swung his shotgun and inadvertently hit the 70-year-old man with a second shot.
The victim sustained pellet wounds but, fortunately, the injuries were not life-threatening. He was initially taken to a nearby hospital and later flown to Colorado Springs for further examination. He has since been treated and released.
Mullenix has been charged with careless hunting, which is an unclassified misdemeanor. This charge can result in a fine ranging from $100 to $1,000 and also carries an assessment of 20 hunting license suspension points against the hunter. Additionally, Mullenix is required to make a mandatory court appearance.
