New injunction sought over Iowa book ban law

DES MOINES, Iowa – The battle over an Iowa law that restricts and bans certain books continues with a new request for an injunction.

The law, SF 496 , signed by Governor Reynolds in May of 2023, bans books that contain descriptions or visuals of sex acts as well as discussions about gender identity and gender orientation in kindergarten through sixth-grade classrooms.

The ACLU along with Lambda Legal managed to get an injunction against the law back in December, but the state appealed and a federal judge lifted the injunction in August.

Now, Lambda Legal, the ACLU of Iowa, and the law firm Jenner & Block LLP are bringing the case back to federal court, saying a recent Supreme Court case aligns with its request and must be taken into account.

The latest request for a new preliminary injunction was filed on October 18 th in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Iowa Central Division on behalf of Iowa Safe Schools, six LGBTQ+ students from Iowa who attend Iowa public schools, and two educators.
