When I was a kid, there were two gas stations that we went to in Iowa. One was Casey’s (and they had the best donuts). The other was Kum & Go. To all of you Gen Zers, there was a time when going to a gas station was not an enjoyable experience. Gas station coffee was something you drank out of desperation. And before Kwik Trip set the standard of gas station cleanliness, every gas station in the 1980s was a bit sketch. Some even required us to use a key to open a door on the outside of the building for the bathroom. And when you got inside, you really didn’t want to be there. There were no regular cleaning schedules and charts to check off on the door. Plain and simple, they were just nasty, practically all the time.
