Ice Storm conditions are covering a large portion of the Upper Midwest. Dangerous conditions are developing across Eastern Nebraska, Iowa, Southern Minnesota, Wisconson and Western Illinois. Winter Weather Advisories and Ice Storm Warnings are posted. Icing extends as far south as Northern Missouri and also into the lower penisula of Michigan. Ice accretion of up to a half inch can easily bring down trees and power lines along. Dangerous road conditions exist in this area into Sunday.
Icy conditions will spreadin into the Central Appalachians Sunday from Western Virginia north to West Virginia and Western Pennsylvania as well as parts of Central NY, Northeast Pennsylvania, Northern New Jersey and Southeastern NY Sunday and this will create slick road conditions in these areas.
Low pressure in the Midwest is the cause and it is moving eastward with a warm front pushing into a very cold high in New England. Cold air remains trapped at low levels until the warm front passes which it eventually does and temperatures then rise above freezing. Travelers should exercise caution on roadways and check with your airline if you are travelling anywhere in the Midwest or Northeast this weekend. Later next week another cold air mass will be dropping south from Canada and this will likely set off another round of wintry weather across the Midwest and interior areas of the Northeast and Mid Atlantic states.
