DES MOINES – In 2024, 351 people died on Iowa’s roads. The Iowa State Patrol has plans to lower that number in 2025.
Sergeant Alex Dinkla, a Public Information Officer with the Iowa State Patrol, said that Iowa State Patrol will push lawmakers to pass a hands-free law this year banning using a cell phone while driving.
“We’re going to be doing is we’re going to be pushing very hard to make Iowa a hands free state. We know that there’s plenty of people out there that are driving with those, say, the devices, being distracted, driving down the road. We see it each and every day.” Dinkla said.

Dinkla said that other states have lowered the number of fatal crashes by passing hands-free legislation.
“Neighboring states have already done it. They’ve seen a huge reduction in their crashes. And we know that if we bring that to Iowa, we’re going to make Iowa a much safer place to drive. And, you know, so far this year, having 350 fatalities, that’s 350 fatalities, too many.” Dinkla said.
