(KOAM) – Animal activists are seeking to update the wording in the Kansas Pet Animal Act.
In an effort to improve the welfare of companion animals across Kansas, House Bill 2542 proposes a significant amendment to the Kansas Pet Animal Act, a piece of legislation that has been the cornerstone of pet animal agency regulation for over three decades. The act, which last saw amendments in 2017, is under review to incorporate the term “continuous” in its mandate for the care of animals, a move that animal welfare advocates argue is crucial for ensuring the health and safety of pets under the care of licensed facilities.
Joshua McGinn, Assistant Secretary of the Kansas Department of Agriculture, emphasized the collaborative effort behind the proposed changes, stating, “We have been working with stakeholders from every part of the industry for many months to try to make sure that we’ve got a good bill that just updates the act and continues to make sure that we have really good animal health and safety here in Kansas.”
