Kansas election officials complete hand count of votes cast in tight Legislature races

TOPEKA ( KSNT ) – Kansas election workers have completed two close-race audits Thursday impacting two seats in the Kansas Legislature.

Whitney Tempel with the Kansas Secretary of State’s (SOS) office announced in a press release on Nov. 14 that audits for Kansas Senate District 5 for Wyandotte and Leavenworth Counties and Kansas House District 49 for Johnson County have been completed. These audits were triggered following the Nov. 5 General Election .

Tempel said close-race audits were automatically issued due to the races being extremely close. Election workers counted by hand each ballot tied to these races and compared them to a machine-tabulated vote count. Unofficial vote results, last updated on Nov. 8, for these races can be found below:

  • Kansas House of Representatives 49.
    • Nikki L. McDonald (D) – 6,183/51%.
    • Kurtis Ruf (R) – 6,058/49%.
  • Kansas Senate 5
    • Jeff Pittman (D) – 15,479/50%.
    • Jeff Klemp (R) – 15,520/50%.
