Kansas to eliminate grocery state sales tax in the new year

PITTSBURG, Kan. (KOAM) — Starting January 1, 2025, Kansas will no longer have a grocery state sales tax.

The legislative change to lower the state’s grocery sales tax was passed in 2022. Originally, Kansas had a sales tax of 6.5% on groceries.

A three-year plan was put in place to reduce the tax. In 2023, the rate was reduced to 4%, and in 2024, it dropped to 2%.

On January 1, 2025, the tax will be completely eliminated.

Two Pittsburg residents, Gabrielle Squires and Suzanne Johns Smith, are looking forward to the savings this will bring.

“We have a large family. My husband is currently working two jobs. and it’s very important that we find the coupons that we can find “said Squires.

“We want to keep prices low so that everyone can afford everything they need. And every little bit helps” said Smith.

According to research from the Kansas Health Institute, grocery sales taxes are linked to higher rates of food insecurity.

Gabrielle Squires sees the upcoming change as a chance to manage her family’s grocery budget more easily.
