TOPEKA ( KSNT ) – Kansas Governor Laura Kelly is celebrating the end of the state’s tax on groceries this week which is estimated to save taxpayers millions of dollars.
The Office of the Governor issued a press release on Jan. 2 regarding the end of Kansas’ sales tax on some food items. The tax was gradually reduced from its original 6.5% number in 2022 down to 0% as of Jan. 1, 2025 .
“The complete elimination of the state sales tax on food is a win for Kansas,” Kelly said. “By axing the food tax once and for all, the average family of four will save $500 per year on groceries. I’m proud that we’ve put more money back into Kansans’ pockets thanks to this commonsense legislation.”
Kelly approved a bill in 2022 to bring the state sales tax rate down under the political slogan “Axe the Food Tax.” Her office estimates that Kansans will save around $156 million due to the reduction in taxes from 2% in 2024 to 0% in 2025.
