Black Ice: Road conditions across Kansas deteriorate

KANSAS HIGHWAY PATROL (KOAM) — The road conditions across Kansas continue to deteriorate through the day.

KHP Trooper Ben gives an example of “black ice” in a recorded message on I-35 where a tractor-trailer has overturned behind him. Black ice is really clear, unseen ice, that shows the surface below.

Bridges are exposed to cold air from above, below, and all sides, while roads are only exposed to cold air from the surface.

Allen County Sheriff’s Office have shared messages regarding slick roads near Iola, Kan. A pickup truck spun around slamming into the ditch occurred as they shared the following.

“1:20 pm 29°: The county blacktop road went from looking wet to the 4W-drive truck going sideways and spinning into the ditch. While bumping his head on the side window, the driver credits wearing his seatbelt for keeping him in his seat and otherwise uninjured.”
