Kansas issues Emergency Alert for dangerous road conditions

KANSAS (KOAM) – Kansas issues an Emergency Alert due to dangerous road conditions.

Shortly after 6:00 p.m., residents in the state got an alert sent to their phones:

“Emergency Alert

Unless it is an emergency, please do not drive on Kansas roads. It is very dangerous for you and for our emergency services employees. Stay home. Stay safe. Many Kansas state and federal highways are closed due to very dangerous conditions. These conditions will continue into Monday, Jan. 6, 2025.”

Road condition maps are indicating that roads are worse in the northern sections of our viewing area. But as law enforcement and officials say, if you don’t need to be on the road, stay home.

A section of I-70 was closed in central Kansas by Saturday afternoon. Roughly 10 inches (25 centimeters) of snow had fallen in parts of the state, with snow and sleet totals predicted to top 14 inches for parts of Kansas and northern Missouri. ( Read more )
