Schools, highways and more were shut down in Salina and throughout Kansas after the first winter storm hit the area Saturday and Sunday.
According to the National Weather Service’s online snowfall map, by 4 p.m. Sunday, Salina had a report of 12 inches of snow in the city.
A forecaster from the Wichita NWS office said that snow was forecast to continue to fall into the evening, meaning the total will likely be higher by the morning.
I-70 closed throughout much of Kansas
At 3:20 p.m. Sunday, the Kansas Department of Transportation announced Interstate 70 was closed in both directions from the Missouri state line to Ellsworth County, with the eastbound lanes closed all the way to Hays.
“Low visibility, impassable conditions and extreme winter weather has caused highways to close,” KDOT said in a news release announcing the closure.
All state highways in more than Kansas counties, which includes Saline County were also closed by KDOT.
“Additional road closures are possible as the winter storm continues to move across the state,” KDOT in the release.
