Kentucky Mom Accused of Nearly Starving Son to Death: ‘Refeeding Syndrome’

Sheena Wood, 39, is being held in the Franklin County Regional Detention Center on $25,000 bond

A Kentucky mother has been accused of nearly starving her child to death, which was so severe, that the boy suffered from the horrifying “refeeding syndrome.”

Sheena Wood, 39,  faces several charges of assault, criminal abuse and endangering the welfare of a minor, stemming from the allegedly starving her child, local station WKYT reported on Tuesday.

Frankfort police alleged Wood assaulted her son via circumstances that “manifested in extreme indifference to the value of human life,” causing him to “slowly starve,” as reported by WKYT.

The arrest citation, as cited by the station, accuses Wood of committing criminal abuse through cruel punishment and torture by allegedly not feeding her son, who was described as a “physically helpless juvenile.”

The boy was in such dire condition, that he suffered from “refeeding syndrome,” which, according to WKYT, refers to the physical complications that arise from normal food intake after being at the point of clinical starvation.
