Takeaways from Fancy Farm: Emphasis on Beshear absence, GOP dominates political speaking

FANCY FARM, Ky. — Kentucky’s traditional — and rowdy — political picnic returned Saturday afternoon with plenty of BBQ and zingers to go around.

The 144th Fancy Farm Political Picnic in Graves County featured some of the commonwealth’s politicians and constitutional officers who delivered speeches that included roasts of their political opponents.

The GOP dominated this year’s lineup, and focused on criticizing Democratic Gov. Andy Beshear’s absence and the southern border crisis.

It was also an opportunity for opponents and advocates to pitch their arguments on how Kentuckians should vote on Constitutional Amendment 2 , which asks voters whether they want the General Assembly to send public tax dollars to non-public schools.

Beshear and Lt. Gov. Jacqueline Coleman’s absence didn’t go unnoticed

Multiple Republicans made comments on Beshear missing out on this year’s picnic and the governor’s growing national profile.

“I don’t know who she’ll pick, but I know it ain’t Andy,” Attorney General Russell Coleman said.
