As the dust settles from last week’s presidential election, a longtime political journalist says Governor Andy Beshear is “in the hunt” for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2028. Al Cross is a member of the Kentucky Journalism Hall of Fame who’s covered local and state politics for four decades. He said while Beshear campaigned for the Harris-Walz ticket, their loss ups his chances for the White House.
“If Harris had been elected, she would have been the prohibitive favorite to be renominated in 2028 and Beshear’s term ends in 2027 and that’s a long time to lay out of office. Now he is able to end his term with a race for president.”
Beshear was one of the few people Harris interviewed for the job of running mate. Cross said his references to faith might have helped Harris in North Carolina and Georgia – and he might get a chance to test that come 2028.
“He’s in the hunt because he has proven his ability to attract persuadable votes, and he is a moderate which the Democrats clearly need, and yet he’s also been able to stay on good terms with progressives.”
