GEORGETOWN, Ky. ( FOX 56 ) — From 1943 to 1946, Cecil Hill was a medic in the Pacific Theater, spending much of his time in New Guinea. It was a world he hadn’t experienced before.
“I was an old farm boy—right off the farm and went right into the army. Everything was new,” said Hill.
While he was busy patching wounds, he had emotional ones that still haven’t healed, more than seven decades later.
“You would hear them (wounded soldiers) cry out in the night, hollering for their mama. That was very penetrating. That’s the first time I’ve said this,” said Hill through tears.
Someone else would affect his life but in a more positive way. Opal, the woman who stole his heart when they were kids.
“I met her when she was four years old, and we’ve been playmates ever since,” Hill said.
