Good evening, Heartland. Tomorrow is a First Alert Action Day for winter weather moving into the region late tonight and early tomorrow morning which could have major impacts on roadways, travel, and potentially power outages as well. Before the winter weather moves in, expect cloudy skies with temperatures in the mid to low 30s tonight. We will start to see the winter system begin making its way into our westernmost counties, such as Reynolds, Carter, and Ripley counties, late tonight, and move across southeast Missouri. This will occur between 10 pm tonight and 1 am Sunday morning. The storms will begin crossing over into southern Illinois and western Kentucky between midnight and 3 am. All forms of winter precipitation, snow, sleet, freezing rain, and rain, are all on the table. The worst time for travel will be between 2 am and noon on Sunday, as this will be when the most ice will be able to form on roads. Our northern counties should expect snow mixing with sleet, with 3 to 6 inches of this mixture possible. 0.5 to 0.75 inches of ice is possible for our central counties, meaning slick roads and potential power outages. For our southernmost counties, early travel impacts are possible, but as locally heavy rain will move into the region, along with thunder, this will lighten the chances for more ice development.
