Tracking power outages: Winter storm knocks out power as it sweeps through the bluegrass

KENTUCKY ( FOX 56 ) — The first winter storm of 2025 has knocked out power for some residents as it sweeps through the bluegrass.

This storm carried the potential for heavy snow accumulations, dangerously cold temperatures, and freezing rain.

“A quarter of an inch is where you’re going to start to see lines being affected. A half inch of ice would add almost 300 pounds of weight to a typical span of power line,” Joe Arnold, with Kentucky Electric Cooperatives, said. “So imagine the 300-pound person hanging from your power line, and what can happen?”

According to the FOX 56 Weather Authority, central Kentucky could see up to three-quarters of an inch.
