Bill Cassidy faces uphill battle to win reelection but independents can still vote for him

U.S. Sen. Bill Cassidy dodged a political bullet when state legislators agreed two weeks ago to let independents vote in a new, closed congressional primary system. For a time, it appeared as if the independent voters that Cassidy would need to win reelection in 2026 would be excluded from the closed primaries.
