Louisiana must redraw its legislative districts, federal judge rules. Here’s why.

A federal court judge has ruled that Louisiana’s state legislative maps must be redrawn because they violate the Voting Rights Act by diluting Black votes. U.S. District Chief Judge Shelly Dick handed down that decision Thursday, two months after a trial on the maps was held in her courtroom. Her court order gives the Legislature time to implement new maps.
