During a recent press briefing, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) condemned Democrats for blocking a critical Israel funding bill, accusing them of playing politics at the expense of national security.
Speaker Johnson’s remarks followed President Joe Biden’s threat to veto the bill and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer’s (D-NY) pledge to block it in the Senate.
The Louisiana Republican pointed out that despite meeting the funding amount requested by the president, 166 House Democrats aligned with Senator Schumer and rejected the bill.
“It’s bad for National Security, it’s also terrible policy and terrible Politics,” Speaker Johnson stated. “If they’re going to follow that lead, I think they did it to their detriment.”
The proposed bill, totaling $14.3 billion, aimed to replenish stockpiles and munitions for Israel, a key U.S. ally. Johnson emphasized the urgency of supporting Israel, particularly in light of current regional dynamics.
“There is no reason whatsoever for them to object to the contents of that bill,” Speaker Johnson emphasized. “They’re doing it for political purposes.”
