Louisiana Community Scrambles as Dollar General Closes Multiple Stores

Dollar General Shutters Five Stores, Leaving Louisiana Community in Retail Drought

Dollar General is set to close five stores in New Orleans East on August 14, sparking concerns about job losses and reduced access to affordable goods in an area already struggling with limited retail options. The closures will impact up to 50 employees and potentially exacerbate food insecurity in the predominantly low-income neighborhood.

Councilman Oliver Thomas expressed concern about the economic impact, stating, “Anytime businesses are closing, families and jobs are affected. There has to be an effort by the city and our business community to help those families and market those locations for compatible uses.”

The sudden departure of Dollar General raises questions about the future of retail in New Orleans East. Natori Green of the Broadmoor Improvement Association highlighted the importance of accessible stores like Dollar General, noting that their presence helps combat food deserts by providing nearby shopping options for residents.
