Canada welcoming back Louisiana families expelled long ago

The Acadian World Congress is this week in Canada. Louisiana Lt. Governor Billy Nungesser is visiting “The Great White North” to reunite Acacian descendants expelled from the country as early as the 17th century.

A large majority of those Acadians ended up settling in Louisiana.

“And it’s a whole week of celebration, we’ll be hosting a lot of events to lure people and to encourage those families from Louisiana to invite their family and friends back to Louisiana,” said Nungesser.

The event revolves around August 15th, the National Day of Acadia, which was chosen in 1881 to coincide with the feast of Our Lady of Assumption, the patron state of Acadia.

Nungesser said they’ll also sign a new accord, which they traditionally do every five years when the event occurs. And you can’t have a gathering of Louisianas without good food and good music.

“We’ll be having Zachary Richard, who will be performing. He’s a great ambassador for Louisiana, from here. They love him in Canada so it’s a great opportunity for us to highlight that great Cajun music as well,” said Nungesser.
