FLORIDA ( KLFY ) — The American Red Cross has sent more than 2,000 volunteers to Florida to help residents recover in the aftermath of Hurricane Milton, including volunteers from Louisiana.
Micah Nicholas, of the American Red Cross, said six Louisiana volunteers were sent to help with preparation efforts but more are expected to be deployed.
“We had volunteers there pre landfall. We’ll be deploying more from right here in Louisiana to after that damage has been assessed. And we understand what the critical needs are,” Nicholas said.
Nicholas said the number of storms making landfall this year have put a heavy workload on their volunteers, but with more opportunity to help, they’ve stepped up to the plate.
“First it was Beryl, then Debby, then Francine, Helene and now Milton. So, our volunteers got a few days of rest and then they jumped right back into action to help those communities,” Nicholas said.
He said that last night, the American Red Cross saw 85,000 people across 330 shelters as a result of the storm.
