Study: Louisiana in top US states most likely to spend Thanksgiving in the emergency room

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — A new study revealed that Louisiana is among the top states most likely to spend Thanksgiving in the emergency room.

Ladah Law Firm , a personal injury law firm in Las Vegas, looked at data sourced from the American Hospital Association to find the total number of emergency room visits for every 1,000 population in 2022 for each state, according to a news release.

From there, a ranking of the states based on the number of emergency room visits was created.

“Thanksgiving is a wonderful time for families to come together, but it’s also a time when emergency room visits can spike due to increased travel, food preparation and outdoor activities,” said Ramzy Ladah, owner/lead attorney of Ladah Law Firm.

According to the study, Louisiana was named the second most likely state in the U.S. to visit the emergency room during the annual holiday, with 574 visits per 1,000 population. The study stated that emergency room visits in the state “often rise around Thanksgiving due to cooking-related burns or cuts from Thanksgiving meal prep.”
