It’s good news that there are real ways to combat the heavy toll that worsening disasters and the resulting skyrocketing insurance premiums are taking on Louisianans. Some solutions – fortified roofs, elevating homes and updating building codes – are known. Others, such as hurricane-proofing houses using steel beams and other ways to fight wind and water, are still experimental. But around Louisiana, enterprising government workers, businesspeople and academics are actively tackling the problem.
