MONROE, La. (KTVE / KARD)–The pistol recovered by the suspect in the United Healthcare shooting was a so-called ghost gun, firearms that can be assembled at home. NBC 10’s Joel Massey has more on the issue of ghost guns and how they are showing up more and more at crime scenes.
3D printed guns are untraceable firearms that contain no serial number and can be assembled at home without background checks. According to Giffords, a gun violence prevention and advocacy group led by former congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, Louisiana has no law restricting untraceable firearms.
David Pucino, Legal Director at Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence, highlights the way gun parts can be bought online without serial numbers.
“And the way companies have been going about selling these products is that they sell the gun in unfinished form and they claim that they are not actually selling a gun. So they claim they don’t have to follow any of the gun laws and as a result we’ve seen gun traffickers using these companies in huge numbers and then selling them in the criminal market.”
