The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers said Tuesday it opposes Union Pacific’s proposed $85 billion acquisition of Norfolk Southern, saying discussions with the railroad did not produce the worker protections the union was seeking.
Hagerstown is a hub for Norfolk Southern, which operates Vardo Yard off Maryland Avenue and has an intermodal terminal in nearby Greencastle, Pa., known as the Franklin County Regional Intermodal Facility.
Norfolk Southern’s state fact sheets list about 3,400 employees in Pennsylvania, about 700 in West Virginia and about 100 in Maryland. The figures are approximate, and the company does not break them down by union membership.
