DNA from enslaved 19th century Maryland girl traced forward to living relatives

Last year, Agnes Jackson, 86, took a DNA test to learn more about her family history. Jackson, who is African-American, is one of millions of people whose ancestry is difficult or impossible to trace beyond the mid-19th century because her ancestors were enslaved. In historical records, their names are written partially or not at all – what some have referred to as the “brick wall” of slavery.
