Winter Storm 6-12 inches of snow across a 1500 mile stretch Kansas east to Virginia & Maryland

We are seeing what will be the biggest snowstorm in several years across a wide 1500 mile zone extending across Kansas, Missouri, Kentucky, Southern Illinois and Indiana, Southern Ohio, West Virginia, Northern Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, Southern Pennsylvania and Southern New Jersey. This will occur Sunday across the Lower Ohio Valley and Monday in areas to the east.

Snow forecasts show a large area of 8 to 12 inches through Sunday night across many states from Kansas to West Virginia. By Monday morning the snow will have spread into areas to the east in Virginia, Maryland, Delaware and Southern New Jersey. The snow forecast map is for the period ending 7am Monday morning.

There is much to sort out with this system. Even though it looks impressive, when it reaches the coast it will be interacting with the blocking system over Atlantic Canada. Depending on the state of the upper air, this low could lift a little northward and bring accumulating snows north of NYC and Coastal Connecticut or it could get suppressed southward if the blocking is too strong and the winds aloft in New England are more northwest. We will be monitoring the situation closely for the Northern Mid Atlantic to Southern New England for any changes in the storm track. Winter Storm Warnings are going to be issued for a large area of the Middle Mississippi and Ohio Valley later today with additional Winter Storm watches and warnings for areas to the east over the weekend.
