Gov. Healey announces major step toward permanent Berkshire Flyer service, expanded passenger rail in western Massachusetts

Pittsfield — Gov. Maura Healey’s administration announced on Thursday, October 8, an agreement with the railroad company CSX on track improvements in Pittsfield that officials say will support permanent seasonal Berkshire Flyer service.

Under the agreement between the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) and CSX, the state will pay to build a siding and other track improvements in the Pittsfield area. The work is meant to increase rail capacity and reduce conflicts between passenger and freight trains. MassDOT will also study whether a new platform at Pittsfield Station is feasible…
