SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – In a heartfelt effort to combat hunger in local communities, Big Y announced on Thursday that their annual Sack Hunger campaign has resulted in the donation of 1.5 million meals to food banks across their two-state marketing area.

The initiative, which has been ongoing since 2010, aims to provide support to those in need through partnerships with four food banks within the region. These food banks, including the Food Bank of Western Massachusetts, the Worcester County Food Bank, the Greater Boston Food Bank, and the Connecticut Foodshare, play a crucial role in distributing food to various community organizations such as soup kitchens, food pantries, and senior food programs.
Customers had the opportunity to contribute to the Sack Hunger campaign by making a $5 donation at Big Y supermarkets or Table & Vine Fine Wines and Liquors. Each $5 donated equated to 10 meals for individuals and families facing food insecurity. Moreover, Big Y expanded their efforts this year by allocating specific proceeds from select products such as produce, floral arrangements, Smart Chicken, USDA Choice Angus Beef, and items from Big Y’s family of brands to further bolster the campaign.
