Absence of snow in February raising eyebrows

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – We’re now a week into February and we haven’t seen any snow yet this month.

Historically some of the biggest snowstorms and blizzards we’ve seen have occurred during the month of February.

So far we’ve enjoyed some pretty sunny and mild weather this February and we haven’t picked up any snow this month. A lot of the snow we had in January has now melted away.

22News Meteorologist Chris Bouzakis said, “In terms of the season we are below average. We had an above-normal January where we were around just over 16 inches but for the month of February, the average for the month is 12.9 inches and we are yet to pick up any snow this month.”

But this is typically the time of year when we can get quite a bit of snow. In the past, some of our biggest snowstorms have occurred during the month of February. There was the Blizzard of 1978 that paralyzed the state for days.

In 2013, another powerful February blizzard hit western Massachusetts on the 8th and 9th, 20 inches of snow fell in less than 24 hours. The clean-up from that storm lasted for days. Some other big February snowstorms include February 15-17th 1958, February 5-6th, 2001, and February 17-18th 2003.
