These local beaches remain closed heading into the Fourth of July holiday

Dozens of swimming spots are closed due to bacteria concerns.

If you’re planning a beach day as part of your July Fourth celebrations, plan ahead. Dozens of Massachusetts beaches are closed to swimmers over bacteria concerns heading into the holiday weekend.

As of Tuesday evening, more than 30 state beaches — both ocean and freshwater — were listed as closed to swimming due to bacteria levels, according to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health.

“If a beach is closed, do not swim or enter the water at that location to avoid risk of illness,” the state website reads.

The state said it is updating the list of closures twice daily, at 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., during beach season.
