Massachusetts’ education system report card

BOSTON (WWLP) – The National Assessment Governing Board and Governor Healey held an event providing a report card for education in Massachusetts.

At the event, Governor Healey spoke about the state’s recent education successes including fully funding the Student Opportunity Act, providing free school breakfasts and lunches, and improving reading levels with the Literacy Launch program.

“Education is the foundation of our state’s identity. It is the absolute ticket to our competitiveness and economic growth and success,” said Healey. “Education is the great leveler and the enabler of opportunity.”

Paul Reville played a central role in creating the Massachusetts Education Reform Act of 1993 and analyzed their progress at the event. He also advocated for continued use of MCAS standardized testing as a graduation requirement, despite a November ballot question that looks to abolish the requirement.

“We have made progress, our standards have proved durable even though some of those standards are currently under attack,” said Reville. “Importantly, there have been some real gains and some real gap closing. But in the end, we have to admit that it’s been nowhere near enough.”
