Guest column: Free community college bridge to brighter future

I love the start of the fall semester.

As the slower pace of summer begins to fade, the college comes alive as we prepare to welcome new students to our campus. Soon the halls will be filled with the energy and excitement of students beginning the academic year.

For many of them, this is a new beginning — a chance to explore new horizons, learn new skills, make new friends and begin the journey to making their dreams of a college degree a reality. The crispness of the fall air and the vibrant colors of nature mirror the excitement of our students as they begin a new chapter of their lives.

As this fall approaches, new, unimaginable possibilities emerge. This has never been truer in our state’s history after the signing of the governor’s budget in late July, making community college free for all.

Think about that. No tuition, no fees, no income limitations and even an allowance for books and supplies for certain students who qualify, thanks to the state’s new MassEducate program, coupled with last year’s MassReconnect program.
