Prepare for icy conditions on the road

WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for parts of western Massachusetts and it could bring icy conditions to some towns Monday night.

A Winter Weather Advisory is expected for much of the northeast, including areas in Hampshire, Franklin, and Berkshire counties. The National Weather Service is advising all travelers to drive slowly and use caution.

One West Springfield resident Lisha Collins, told 22News what she notices when there’s snow on the roads,” People drive like they don’t have any sense. You would think that they would be conscious enough and aware of other people, but they’re not.”

It normally takes us 60 to 100 feet to stop while going 35 miles an hour but under icy conditions this distance could increase 3 to 10 times as much which could put you in an accident. Aggressively speeding and stopping in icy conditions can cause a quick loss of traction and control of your car. The ice isn’t the only factor that accounts for winter weather accidents.
