MassGOP weighs in on legislative audit battle

BOSTON, Mass. (WWLP)–The Massachusetts GOP is joining in the chorus of calls for the attorney general to step in and force the state legislature to comply with an audit, as a result of the passage of Ballot Question 1.

New lawsuit challenges House vote on audit

22News spoke to the Massachusetts GOP and they say they are demanding action.

“This is not a particularly controversial thing, because passed with over 70% of the vote statewide and 70% of the vote in Springfield. Why is the legislature trying to delay this?” said Chair Amy Carnevale.

The auditor held a press conference last week, vowing to involve the attorney general once the law takes effect if legislators continue to pursue delays, which her office interpreted to be on December 5.

“If they do not respond, if they do not comply with that request, we will then be engaging with the attorney general’s office for her assistance,” said State Auditor Diana DiZoglio.

There is disagreement about the date of effect, as the constitution reads that ballot question initiatives kick in 30 days after the state election, but does not specify if the election is considered complete on election day or when the results are certified, which just happened last week.
