End of year tips to maximize your 2024 tax return

Some bills and amendments are set to take effect on Wednesday in Massachusetts, but four main laws may impact you. The laws in Massachusetts impact Uber and Lift drivers, salary transparency, health care laws, and paid family and medical leave.

The first is for drivers for Uber and Lyft, with the new law, they will receive benefits. A driver’s earnings cap will increase annually by 3% or the rate of inflation and also drivers will receive one hour of sick pay for every 30 hours contracted. Starting at the end of the month on January 30th, Uber and Lyft will also be required to pay each driver half of the paid family medical leave rate for independent contractors. Back in the November state election, voters approved the right for Uber and Lyft drivers to unionize.

Another new law also changes part of the Massachusetts paid family medical leave. There will be changes to the maximum weekly benefit amount and employee contribution rates. The maximum weekly benefit you can receive per week will be $1,170.64.
