Deer management in Michigan is in a bit of a predicament.
The number of hunters in Michigan has been dropping steadily over the years. And, the number is expected to decrease even more over the years as older hunters hang up their orange vests and hunting caps.
While the number of hunters in Michigan dwindles, the number of deer on the other hand is rising rapidly. So much so that many Michigan communities have to take measures to start managing local hearts as car accidents rise.
Now the Michigan Department of Natural Resources is bringing hunters in to get their takes on how to manage the Michigan deer herd.
The numbers need to be brought down because overpopulation brings a host of problems, from increasing car strikes to diseases like chronic wasting disease and bovine tuberculosis.
A number of hunters have said that the changes that the DNR has made over the years has made problems worse.
