Gretchen Whitmer Apologizes For Bizarre Doritos TikTok Stunt After Catholic Outrage

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D) has issued an apology for a viral video showing her feeding a Dorito’s chip to a left-wing podcaster on her knees.

The initial controversy started after popular influencer Liz Plank posted a video with Plank on her knees as Whitmer placed a Dorito chip in her mouth. Whitmer then stares into the camera while wearing a Harris-Walz campaign hat.

The stunt was apparently done to promote the 2022 CHIPS Act which was signed by President Joe Biden to allow for $280 billion in spending on domestic research for STEM fields and semiconductors.

Multiple Catholic organizations issued statements at the time condemning the video because it appeared to mock the Communion sacrament. Michigan’s Catholic Conference issued a statement earlier this week claiming Whitmer was mocking Catholicism.

“It is not just distasteful or ‘strange,’ it is an all-too-familiar example of an elected official mocking religious persons and their practices,” said Paul A. Long, the organization’s president and CEO. “While dialogue on this issue with the governor’s office is appreciated, whether or not insulting Catholics and the Eucharist was the intent, it has had an offensive impact.”
