Michigan State Police’s ‘Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over’ campaign has been underway for more than a month, and troopers in Northern Michigan are calling it a success so far.
Trooper Michael West with the Cadillac Post has been with the Michigan State Police for the past 11 years. He said the patrols are critical to making sure people are safe while driving during the holidays.
“We do our stepped-up patrols around the holidays to make sure they get to their destination safely and just protect people that are out there motoring during the holidays,” said West.
West said they step up patrols around this time every year to make sure people are celebrating safely.
“People just truly don’t understand that one night and one decision of partaking in those activities can change the rest of your life, if not the life of somebody else,” said West.
He said a lot of drivers may think they are ok even when they aren’t.
“They say to us that ‘they’ve only had a couple of drinks, they’re not going too far, they’re fine to drive. What’s scary is a lot of people consume that stuff, and they don’t really understand how quickly they can be above the legal limit to drive,” said West.
