Republicans tee up wage bill as they take control of Michigan House

LANSING, Mich. (WOOD) — Michigan’s newly elected state representatives took their oaths of office in Lansing Wednesday, marking the beginning of the 2025 legislative session.

Republicans regained control of the Michigan House of Representatives after Democrats held the majority for the past two years. After the formal roll call, invocation and Pledge of Allegiance, lawmakers were sworn in by Michigan Supreme Court Justice Kyra Harris Bolden.

Democrats still control the Senate and governor’s office, meaning that divided government has again returned to Michigan. Democrats say they’re willing to work across the aisle to get things done.

“I think it’s the only option,” state Rep. Kristian Grant, D-Grand Rapids, said. “In this divided government, we’re going to have to do things that support on all sides of the aisle. That means all sides are going to have to give a little, but honestly that’s usually what’s best for Michiganders.”
