Minnesota Supreme Court Stops Recall Election for Columbia Heights Council Member

The Minnesota Supreme Court has ruled that a recall election for Columbia Heights City Council member Kay “KT” Jacobs should not move forward as planned on February 13th, 2023.

The recall effort stems from allegations in 2022 that Jacobs questioned the biracial identity of then-council candidate Justice Spriggs in a phone call.

An independent investigation found that Jacobs likely made the call and failed to act ethically.

The Columbia Heights City Council and Mayor subsequently approved a motion asking Jacobs to resign, but she refused.

A group of citizens then started a petition to recall Jacobs, gathering enough signatures to force a recall vote. The election was approved by the council in July 2022 and set for February 13th, 2023.

Jacobs sued to halt the recall, arguing it did not meet legal requirements and she did not commit malfeasance or nonfeasance.

A lower court initially denied her petition in November 2022. However, Jacobs appealed to the state Supreme Court for an accelerated review.
