Overachieving storm dumps big snow totals in Twin Cities, Minnesota

Minnesota got smacked by heavy snow Wednesday into the overnight hours Thursday.

Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport recorded a new daily record on Wednesday as nearly 7 inches of snow fell. Before the significant snowfall, MSP Airport had only seen 7.3 inches of snow all winter. It was the largest single-day snowfall since Halloween in the Twin Cities.

As of Thursday morning, snow covered roads in the southwest part of the state, with crashes and spinouts seen popping up around the metro and other areas.

A winter weather advisory was previously issued by the National Weather Service, with forecast totals of 2-4 inches predicted in the Twin Cities. The weather service upped its prediction to 3-5 inches, which was still short of the totals in the metro.

The Minnesota State Patrol said from 7 a.m. Wednesday through 7 a.m. Thursday there were 306 crashes with 21 injuries, including two serious injuries or deaths. The State Patrol says 257 spinouts and 11 jackknifed semis also were recorded during the 24-hour period.
