Listeria Contamination Sparks Sprouts Recall

The Wisconsin-based company Jack and the Green Sprouts, Inc. has issued a recall on its alfalfa and alfalfa onion sprouts due to potential listeria contamination. The products were sold in 5-ounce plastic containers with specific lot numbers in Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. No illnesses have been reported related to the recall. Consumers are advised to either discard the products or return them to the point of purchase for a full refund. The company has suspended production while investigating the source of the issue.

Listeria is a bacteria that can cause food poisoning symptoms, with potential severity for certain at-risk groups such as pregnant women, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems. The current recall adds to concerns about listeria outbreaks, with recent incidents involving Boar’s Head liverwurst resulting in fatalities and hospitalizations. Boar’s Head has responded by halting production and emphasizing improvements in food safety protocols. The CDC warns that the actual number of affected individuals during the outbreak may be higher than reported, emphasizing the importance of vigilance and enhanced safety measures in the food industry.
