Minnesota girl discharged from hospital 15 months after being struck by lightning in Florida

A Minnesota girl has been released from the hospital more than a year after she was struck by lightning in Florida, leaving her with permanent injuries.

Mila Vang, 13, and her mother, Nalee Yang, were both struck by lightning in August of 2023 while standing at a beach in Florida. The family had traveled to the state to celebrate Mila’s 12th birthday.

Nalee woke up shortly after the strike, but Mila was left unconscious. She underwent surgery and was brought to stable condition. Still, the incident left Mila without left-side body functions and unable to remember things or people, process information or eat, according to a GoFundMe created by Nalee.

Mila remained at an Orlando hospital until last month, when on Nov. 19 she was transferred to Children’s Minnesota in St. Paul.

This past Thursday, Mila was released from the hospital and allowed to go home.

The GoFundMe supporting Mila’s recovery remains open, having reached around $65,000 of its $100,000 goal.
