Taylor focuses on rebuilding Mississippi Democratic Party

JACKSON, Miss. ( WJTV ) – The Mississippi Democratic Party’s rebuilding phase is in full swing.

With new leadership, the party is staring anew after a historically close gubernatorial race and funding never before seen for a Democratic candidate.

State Rep. Cheikh Taylor (D-District 38) took control of the Mississippi Democratic Party during a turbulent time. Former Chair Tyree Irving was thrust from his position after a vote of no confidence was held just four months out from the 2023 gubernatorial election.

At the time, the governor’s race was tightening, and the Democratic party had a lightning rod of a candidate in Brandon Presley. Taylor had to start from the ground level.

“Get keys to the building again, and make sure that we are actually making sure that our candidates are actually seen as they should be, and that’s viable to run the state of Mississippi. We kind of had to close ranks and make sure we were laser focused in the things that we were doing, but now it’s time to make sure that we’re going far together,” said Taylor.
