FCC chairwoman wants to expand broadband access in Mississippi

JACKSON, Miss. ( WJTV ) – The chairwoman of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) visited Jackson on Friday as Mississippi continues to expand broadband access.

FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel met with local HBCU presidents about the impacts of Mississippi’s digital divide. She said connectivity is needed not only to succeed in education, but in the 21st century.

Mississippi Delta residents concerned about broadband expansion

“There’s nothing in modern life that doesn’t require high speed Internet access. So if you’re a household or a community, without it, you don’t have a fair shot at 21st century success. And what we were hearing is that there’s a lot of concern about communities and people who don’t have. It’s about workforce development and the next generation economy and Mississippi, which is why we have got to seize this moment and the funds that Washington has provided to make sure we really build these networks everywhere and do some good not just for the present, but for the next generation,” said Rosenworcel.
